Newborn babies are very delicate yet utterly lovable, so much so that when one arrives, the parents, godparents, siblings, and other relatives begin to shower them with many gifts such as newborn baby clothes, or a newborn baby doll or two to get them started with playing. And people all look forward to watching the baby when it plays. But very few truly pay attention to the newborn sleep, especially because many people think that this is a time to leave the baby alone to rest.
But while this is true, it is by no means a time to be less concerned. There are many things that parents need to know about a newborn’s sleeping habits, and all of these facts have to be heeded in order to ensure a baby’s proper sleeping habits and safety.
First fact, is that during the early months of a baby’s life, the baby will sleep when it is tired. Unlike older kids, who can be told to take naps or sleep at a predetermined time, newborns cannot be forced to do this. This important fact has to be remembered always, in order for the parents to be able to plan their sleeping habits accordingly. With this in mind, it is also important to know that very few babies actually sleep a full night. Some newborns sleep up to around 5 hours, maximum. Lastly, it is important to help the baby know when it is daytime, and when it is nighttime. Doing this is not just easy, but also help them adjust to sleeping for longer periods at night as they become older. Have the baby take naps during the day in a lit room where the normal everyday noises of the house can be heard, and have the baby sleep in a dark and quiet at night.
